Journal - What are you weekend plans?

My plan for this weekend is go to soccer practice tonight, dance and work on Saturday, and start building our homecoming float on Sunday. Tonight I have soccer practice for two hours which we have to run four miles today so that's going to be fun. Saturday I have to be at work at eight am until noon. I work at my dads business so I usually just either sit at the desk or help entertain the kids that are waiting for their classes. At two, I have dance practice until seven. We're practicing for one of our competitions which I'm excited for. On Sunday, a couple of my friends and I are going over to our friend Jeremy's house to work on our homecoming float. I think it's going to turn out great and I'm really excited to see it finished,

Journal - Most students view siting work as 'a pain in the butt'. How do you feel about it? Is it necessary? When is it appropriate to cite work? What's the importance of it?

I do think citing is a pain in the butt even though it is necessary. I think it's a pain because it takes to much time to do it. It is necessary because someone created that work with hopefully their own words. It's appropriate to site your sources whenever you take an exact quote from an article or whenever you take a photo off of google or any other sites. The importance is making sure you give credit to the original work. If someone took my work without citing it I would be really upset.

Journal - What is your favorite book, magazine, or publication? Why?

My favorite book is Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. I like this book because I find things about the Holocaust interesting. I think it's an interesting topic. I also like this book because it kind of talks about Briar Rose which was one of my favorite stories when I was little. I liked it because it told a different "side" of the story. Another reason is because it has a very good plot which made me not want to put it down.

Journal - Do you enjoy writing? What kind of writing do you enjoy? Why is writing an essential skill in life? How will you use this skill in the future?

Yes I do enjoy writing. I like writing fiction because I can use my imagination. My mind is always wandering and so while writing fiction stories I can always incorporate my thoughts into it. I also like writing nonfiction topics. Like science or history where we already have the facts I just have to organize it into paragraphs. I don't enjoy persuasive writing. I've never been a fan of persuading people into something. I'm not a very good at convincing  to be completely honest. Writing is essential to life because you need to be able to write in order to get a job. You have to write up a transcript and most jobs you need to write at sometime. You can use writing in the future whenever you're applying for a job because most businesses want someone who can write well. Writing will also help your grammar because you learn from your mistakes. Grammar is a big part of a job too.

Journal - Why is creating an outline for a paper important? Do you think it helps you personally? How would you prefer to outline a paper - pen and paper or an online tool? Is there a different way you know if that would prefer to organize your thoughts?

Creating an outline for your paper is important so you can organize your thoughts in one place. If you don't have your thoughts written down you won't remember what you were thinking before. I think it helps me because I don't remember things very easily. My thoughts in my head are also sometimes really random so writing down things help me come back to a certain spot. I think typing things out for me is easier because then I can save it somewhere and not be scared that I lost it forever. I don't have to worry about not being able to read my handwriting if I'm just scribbling something down. I can't really think of any other way that I would prefer to organize my thoughts in.

Journal - Tell me about your weekend. Where did you go? What did you do?

This weekend I was really busy. On Friday after school I had an ice cream social where I served little kids from my dads work ice cream. I actually had a lot of fun considering what I was doing. The kids at my dads work are really funny and energetic. We went through five eight-pint ice cream containers and tons of condiments. On Saturday I had mostly a rest day until four P.M. when I had to go to dance until eight. I have a big competition coming up so we had to work on my solo over and over again. On Sunday, my friend Grace came over and hung out for an hour or two before we went over to Jeremy's house to work on our homecoming float. We started getting all the props ready and making final decisions and then we all just hung out for a bit. Around two I had to leave because I had a modeling photo shoot with Mr. Arlund. We did a lot of fun photos where I was jumping in the air and a lot where I was laughing. This weekend I had a lot of fun and I hope this weekend is just as fun.

Journal - Who do you look up to in life? Why? What have they done to help you or guide you?

The person I look up to is Katy Perry. I look up to her because she's an amazing singer, strong, and not afraid to be herself. I love to sing so she's a huge inspiration for me. She doesn't use a lot of auto tune either and I think that's a rare thing to find in the music industries in this generation. She's a strong person and can get through almost anything. When her and Russell Brand called their engagement off, she was on tour. She was extremely sad but she didn't want to let her fans down so she picked herself up and performed. I think that's a huge thing especially compared to the TLC member burning a house down. Finally, she's not afraid to be herself. She's super unique and I think that makes her special. Unlike other singers/actors/actresses, she doesn't do what everyone else is doing and has her own style. She's guided me to be the best I can be at singing, to get back up, and to be unique. Katy Perry is my idol.

Journal - What is good email etiquette and why is it essential in the "real" world? How can having good email etiquette put you ahead?

Good email etiquette is whenever your email is formal and you wouldn't be embarrassed if you sent it to someone important. It's essential to the real world because you need to be able to write a good email in case you are having trouble with something or if your boss gives you a job that requires you to interview someone. You want to make a good impression on the person so you want to have good email skills. If you have good email etiquette then you can get ahead because people will respond to your emails with respect and not look down upon you. If you don't use your etiquette then they probably won't hire you either.

Public Service Annoucement

Friday, September 6th

Journal - If there was one big global issue in the world that you could fix, what would it be? A cure for cancer? Save the rain forest? Stop pollution? Think about it and then write about it. Why would you choose that specific issue?

I would want to find the cure for cancer. A lot of my relatives suffer from it like my aunt and many of my relatives have passed away from it. It also runs in my family health. My great grandma and grandpa had it, my great great grandpa had it, and it's possible that my grandparents could potentially get it. It would be great if we could find a cure to all cancers but that wouldn't happen all at once. If we could cure one type at a time I would be happy. That way, people not only wouldn't have to suffer through cancer and the treatment but also their families wouldn't have to suffer watching their pain. I think that finding for a cure for cancer would be massive because so many people suffer from it.

Journal - On Friday we discussed Public Service Announcements. In your own words tell me what they are and what their purpose is. If you could create a PSA what would your topic be? Why?

Public Service Announcements(PSA) are when radios or television channels give out announcements about certain topics such as bullying, drug abuse, etc. without earning any money from it. The purpose of a PSA is to inform the listener about current issues going on in either their area or the world. If I were to create a PSA I would probably do it over drug abuse because Cory Monteith and other actors/actresses took their life with it and it could easily happen to a student if he/she had the right connections.
